Covid in children under 19 is usually mild, rarely requires hospitalization, and almost never causes death[1]
It is unclear how much children transmit Covid. Some studies suggest children transmit as much as adults, while others suggest that children under 10 are less contagious than adults.[2]
In-person schooling increases household Covid risk ~40%, with risk increasing with child age, but the risk is significantly reduced if mitigation strategies such as mask wearing, cohorting, distancing, and screening are applied consistently[3].
In the US, the Pfizer vaccine is currently available for children 12 and up, and is expected to be approved for children over 5 by the end of the 2021.[4]
