Rapid, inexpensive paper strip tests can tell you whether you are contagious, allowing you to isolate before you infect others. Research shows that, if used frequently, these tests could significantly drive down infections[1].
Rapid tests are now legal to use in the US[2], but it took a very long time for the FDA to approve them, due to institutional reluctance to treat them differently to slower but more accurate diagnostic tests.
While legal, rapid testing is still not yet standard practice in schools and workplaces - changing this could have a significant impact, particularly in countries where vaccines are not widely available.
